The mausoleum was built in the place where the chapel – the Church of the Covenant of Njegoš used to be, built around 1845. It was built by Njegoš during his lifetime in honor of St. Peter of Cetinje, with the desire to be buried there. The church was bombed in both world wars and finally in 1974. It was destroyed, despite the opposition of the metropolis and the Orthodox believers, and today’s mausoleum was erected in its place.
