Black Lake is only a few minutes’ drive away – about 2 km from the center of \u017dabljak.<\/p>\n

The early colonization history of Zabljak Montenegro
When it comes to Zabljak Montenegro spies a rich story that goes all the way back to the 9th century and the early Montenegrin feudal society. The first name of Zabljak was \u201cVarezina voda\u201d (Varezin\u2019s water), for the stream of drinking water that crosses the land.
Administratively, Zabljak was divided into territorially wide parishes in the early 11th century. At the time when Montenegro was fighting battles with the Byzantine empire, Zabljak belonged to the old state called Rashka.
Between the years of 1482 and 1857, the country was under the Ottoman empire. The greatest shelters from the Turkish invasion were Orthodox Monasteries and churches. In Zabljak Montenegro had beaten the Turks on several occasions and rebuilt their homes afterwards.
According to the great fighting spirit and the courage of Montenegrins, Turks never managed to establish the power in that area. The churches on Zabljak have been built to honour the great victories over the Ottoman invaders.
The modern-day Zabljak
Since the year of 1857, the area of \u017dabljak was a borderline exposed to many conflicts, starting with the Turks, and later on, in World War I. Zabljak Montenegro was providing resistance to the occupiers and after the war, it became a part of the Shavnica district. At this time, the Niksic road\u00a0was built and opened, including several schools and sawmills.
In World War II, people of Zabljak and Durmitor successfully fought against the fascists. They have managed to form a body of insurgent power. For a brief time, it was a stronghold of the Yugoslav great leader, Josip Broz Tito.
After the War, Zabljak Montenegro became a real paradise for tourists all over the world. Today it is the leading winter centre in the region, with many beautiful sights to explore and enjoy.<\/p>\n

Durmitor National Park<\/h3>\n

Durmitor is the highest mountain in Montenegro – “Bobotov Kuk” the highest peak at 2523m, and the first person to reach it was the Austrian Oskar Bauman. In addition, Durmitor hides the deepest canyon in Europe – the Tara canyon (1300m), which is the second deepest in the world right after the Colorado canyon. Because of its blue-green crystal clear, unpolluted water, it is also known as the “Tear of Europe”.<\/p>\n

Such untouched beauty of Durmitor and the Tara River have won international recognition twice. In 1977, as part of the “biosphere and man” project, the Tara River was registered in the ecological reserve of the biosphere of the world, which protected it by an internationally adopted convention. The Durmitor National Park was declared a world natural asset in 1980 and entered in the register of world cultural and natural heritage, which is managed by UNESCO.<\/p>\n

Durmitor simply celebrates life – the wealth of flora and fauna, more than 1,500 species of plants, some of which are characteristic of the Arctic region. In the canyons of Piva and Tara, the presence of tertiary vegetation was recorded, and peatlands in the Durmitor lakes represent enclaves characteristic of the Siberian taiga. A very rare occurrence of the so-called “forest inversions”, which means that in several places above the level of conifers, a cover of deciduous beech vegetation appears.<\/p>\n
