The airport is the second hub of the national airline Air Montenegro.
Tivat Airport is one of the two public airports in Montenegro, the other being Podgorica Airport.
The airport has had a decline in passengers in recent years due to the COVID-19 pandemic and developments in Ukraine, but in recent years it has lost primacy in favor of Podgorica Airport.
In 2024, more than 1.7 million passengers will pass through Tivat Airport.

A bit of History
Tivat Airport was opened on May 30, 1957, with a 1,200-meter-long grassy runway, a small platform, a passenger terminal building and a control tower.
Initially, the airport mainly served domestic passenger traffic, and flights to Belgrade, Zagreb and Skopje were operated by JAT during the Yugosliva Time , using Douglas DC-3 and Ilyushin Il-14 aircraft.
From 1968 to 1971, the airport underwent major expansion and modernization.
It reopened on September 25, 1971, with an asphalt runway measuring 2,500 m × 45 m, an extended platform and a new passenger terminal.
Another expansion of the airport facilities followed after it was damaged in the 1979 earthquake.
On 23 April 2003, ownership of the airport was transferred from Jat Airways to Montenegro Airport, a public company owned by the Government of Montenegro.
The airport underwent reconstruction of the passenger terminal in 2006.
As the noise problem persisted in the mid-2000s, older airlines were permanently banned from using the airport, and wide-body aircraft such as the Ilyushin Il-86 were diverted to Podgorica Airport.
