The History of Herceg Novi

Herceg Novi has a rich and fascinating history spanning centuries, reflecting influences from various cultures and civilizations. The city, located at the entrance to the Bay of Kotor, was founded in 1382 and has changed rulers many times due to its strategic importance.

Foundation & the Middle Ages

Founder: Herceg Novi was founded by Bosnian King Tvrtko I Kotromanić in 1382 under the name “Sveti Stefan.” It was meant to become a trade center and a port for salt exports, which was a valuable commodity at the time.

After Tvrtko’s death, the city changed hands between different rulers, including the Balšić family and the Serbian Despotate.

Ottoman, Venetian, & Austro-Hungarian Rule

1. Ottoman Empire (1482–1687)

The Ottomans conquered Herceg Novi in 1482, renaming it “Novi.”

Many defensive structures were built, including Kanli Kula (“The Bloody Tower”), which was used as a prison.

2. Venetian Republic (1687–1797)

The Venetians took control in 1687, leading to trade and maritime development.

Forte Mare was built during this period and became one of the city’s famous landmarks.

3. Austro-Hungarian Empire (1797–1918)

After the fall of Venice, Herceg Novi became part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, bringing modernization and infrastructure development.

19th & 20th Century

French & Russian Rule: Brief periods of French and Russian rule occurred during the Napoleonic Wars.

Yugoslavia: After World War I, the city became part of Yugoslavia (formerly the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes).

During World War II, it was occupied but played a significant role in the resistance movement.
