Monasteries of Lake Skadar – Montenegro’s Sacred Islands

Lake Skadar, straddling Montenegro and Albania, is Europe’s largest lake and a haven for history, nature, and spirituality. Scattered across its emerald waters are ancient monasteries—remnants of the country’s rich Orthodox Christian heritage. Below are the most remarkable ones, each offering a glimpse into Montenegro’s medieval past and religious traditions.

1. Monastery of Vranjina (St. Nicholas Monastery)

Founded: 1233 by Saint Sava during the Nemanjić dynasty
Location: Vranjina Island, near the village of Vranjina

The Monastery of Vranjina—also known as St. Nicholas Monastery—is often called the “Gate of Lake Skadar.” Built in 1233 under Saint Sava, the first Serbian Archbishop, it played a major role as a spiritual and cultural center during medieval times. In 1843, Ottoman forces destroyed the monastery, but after Montenegro gained independence in 1878, locals faithfully rebuilt it, preserving centuries of heritage. Today, it’s an active place of worship surrounded by scenic wetlands and bird habitats, perfect for photographers and history lovers alike.

2. Monastery Beška

Founded: 1440 (older church earlier)
Location: Beška Island, near Donji Murići village

The Beška Monastery stands on a small, serene island on Lake Skadar. It consists of two churches: the older Church of Saint George (medieval origins, with limited preserved records) and the Church of the Holy Mother of God, commissioned by Jelena Balšić, daughter of Prince Lazar of Serbia, in 1440. Jelena, wife of Đurađ II Stracimirović Balšić, built it as her tomb church, and her grave remains here. Surrounded by crystal waters and lush greenery, Beška offers a peaceful retreat and is a must-see for history buffs and pilgrims alike.

3. Monastery St. George

Founded: 1377 by Father Makarios
Location: St. George Island, Lake Skadar

The St. George Monastery on St. George Island is an active monastic community with a rich past. Founded in 1377 by hermit Father Makarios during the era of the Balšić family, it became a renowned center for manuscript copying and bookbinding in medieval Montenegro. The Church of the Assumption of the Mother of God is the centerpiece, accompanied by monastic quarters. Among its treasures is the tomb of Božidar Vuković Podgoričan, a famous 16th-century printer who advanced Serbian Orthodox publishing. The island’s tranquil setting and historical significance make it one of Lake Skadar’s cultural jewels.

4. Monastery Kom

Founded: 15th century by the Crnojević family
Location: Hill of Kom, opposite Žabljak Crnojevića

Perched on Kom Hill overlooking Lake Skadar, the Kom Monastery was founded by the noble Crnojević family, Montenegro’s medieval rulers. Its Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a stunning example of late-medieval Balkan architecture. Kom Monastery played an essential role in preserving Montenegrin identity and faith during turbulent Ottoman times. Today, visitors are rewarded with panoramic lake views, making it a top stop for photographers, history enthusiasts, and anyone exploring Montenegro’s cultural roots.

5. Monastery Moračnik

Founded: Early 15th century by Balša III Đurđević
Location: Moračnik Island, southeastern Lake Skadar

The Moračnik Monastery, built between 1404–1417, was the legacy of Balša III, ruler of Zeta. The complex includes a church dedicated to the Mother of God of the Three Hands, a monastic residence, and a distinctive four-story defensive tower, all enclosed by ancient stone walls. Situated on Moračnik Island, the monastery was a refuge for monks and a center of spiritual life. Its isolated beauty, surrounded by shimmering waters and bird-rich wetlands, makes it a popular stop on boat tours of Lake Skadar.
