Day trip to National Park Biogradska Gora your amazing day trip is our commitment
Biogradska Gora National Park was founded in 1952. Located in the north-eastern part of Montenegro, between the rivers Lim and Morača, in the central part of the Bjelasica mountain, it covers an area of 5,650 hectares.
Bordered by mountain heights, intersected by streams and bays, decorated with beautiful lakes, decorated with centuries-old forests and tame meadows, it is a magnificent gift of nature.
There are characteristics of all places, areas, regions, something like a matrix, in a narrower sense related to the cities by which we recognize them; or that unfathomable magic of the perfect harmony of nature which is necessarily followed by mysterious occurrences. So, if we find ourselves in the central part, in the very heart of Montenegro, not far from Pljevlja, our life will suddenly become more exciting, because from the top of Durmitor we can suddenly see the whole of Montenegro as if in the palm of our hands.
In just a few hours of walking, we will find ourselves in Biogradska gora National Park – one of the last three rainforests in Europe, and if we dare to step a little deeper into the very depths of the mountain, we will come across the most beautiful thing: the emerald colors of the beautiful Biograd Lake. We will quickly understand how everything is in its place here: centuries-old forests, colorful flowers, and the legend about the creation of the lake, which tells from ancient times that fairies used to drive carts to the threshing floor, which is now its shallowest part. In the place where there is a shallow today, there used to be a joint field between two brothers. In an argument that arose during the distribution of grain at the threshing floor, the younger brother kills the older one. Broken by the pain, the mother cursed her son, and from the force of her curse, the earth broke in the place where the field had been, and thus the lake was created. But there was something left, even in the measure of a fairy – far from the public eye, beautiful and whimsical.
Its protection dates back to 1878, when this territory became the Prince’s Ban, a gift to the then ruler of Montenegro, Prince Nikola. The landscape is extremely gentle, with a dominant green color due to the expanses of unique forest ecosystems, which alternate with colorful landscapes with meadow vegetation.
Glacial landforms such as peaks over 1,000 meters high (Crna Glava – 1,069 m) and glacial waves and cirques, with several glacial lakes, give the landscape a unique beauty.
In the clear lake water, all the beauty of the ancient forest is reflected, on a length of about one thousand and an average width of about four hundred meters, giving a blue-green color to the almost transparent water, especially its northern part of the coast, which is also called the Dragon’s side. How unreal they look in the reflection of the glassy water are giant beech trees over five hundred years old, with a diameter of over one hundred and fifty centimeters and a height of up to fifty meters. The scene arouses the imagination to such an extent and leaves an impression of deep mystery, that anyone who would try to touch that natural harmony, would be trapped in the dark areas of the rainforest, where the sun barely breaks through, and the smell of the forest vegetation indicates a huge variety of plant and animal species. , which are natural guardians and a living shield from any intruder.
The most significant natural value of this national park is the Biogradska gora rainforest, which covers an area of 4,500 hectares and is one of the last three in Europe. It has the character of a strictly protected reserve. The green lungs of this part of the Balkans are located between the rivers Tara and Lim. Prašuma j, gifted to Prince Nikola in 1878 and has been under state protection ever since. It is harmoniously shared by 26 plant communities, more than 200 species of birds, and many wild animals have found a home in it.
In the heart of the rainforest lies the beautiful Lake Biograd, the largest and most famous of the series of glacial lakes in the national park area. All the beauty of the ancient forest is reflected in the clear lake water, giving it a blue-green color and making the landscape such that it leaves a deep impression.
There, in the middle of a hundred-year-old forest, everything is somehow in its place: beautiful glacial “mountain eyes”, and colorful flowers on tame meadows, and the legend about the creation of the lake around which the fairies once circled. In the shallow waters, a story from ancient times says, there used to be a joint field between two brothers. In an argument during the distribution of grain, the younger brother killed the older one. Broken by the pain, the mother cursed her son, and the force of her curse caused the earth to crack where the field had been, and thus the lake was formed. But, there is something left even in the measure of fairies – it is hidden deep in the circus, with an endless beauty that can be felt by anyone who knows how to enjoy it.
The clear and calm blue-green water reflects the ancient beech trees that surround it and the mountain heights in the distance. The scene awakens the imagination and leaves an impression of deep mystery, so much so that everyone wants to remain trapped in that harmony of nature and dark areas where the sun barely breaks through and where the scents of plants indicate the enormous diversity of flora and fauna, centuries-old guardians of the beautiful Biogradska gora.
The sights of the rainforest reserve, other natural values and landscape beauty of the national park make this area a candidate for inclusion in the World Natural Heritage and the international ecological program Man and the Biosphere.
History has left deep traces in these areas. The cultural and historical heritage of the national park consists of archaeological sites, sacred monuments, and folk architecture. Numerous indigenous objects of folk architecture in villages and katuns, houses, log cabins, towers, mills are scattered around the perimeter of the Bjelasica mountain rainforest reserve.
The towns of Pešica rupe, Vranjak, Siska, and Vragodo are very picturesque and attractive. In summer, the slopes come alive, the katuns are filled, and the glades fall asleep to the sounds of chaktars.
Along with indescribable natural beauty, you will be accompanied on every route by indigenous objects of folk architecture and local people with their interesting stories and culinary skills. If you are a fan of hiking, you have the opportunity to conquer the highest peak of Bjelasica, Crna glava (2137 m), from which you can see another beautiful lake – Ursulovacko.
