Location: small village in Montenegro, situated on the river Rijeka Crnojevića, near the northeastern shore of Lake Skadar (Skadarsko Jezero). It is in the municipality of Cetinje.

Population: Rijeka Crnojevica is a Small Village in census of 2011 counted ~ only 175 inhabitants.

Geography: The river is about 12.3 km long. Its source is under a cave in the Obod hill (height ~420 meters), some 2.5 km southwest from the town. It flows through the town and empties into Lake Skadar.

Historical Significance

Origins & Early History

Named after the Crnojević dynasty. Ivan Crnojević (ruled Zeta / Montenegro 1465-1490) relocated his seat in 1475 to Obod, a hill above the river, fortifying it. That place (Obod) later was renamed Rijeka Crnojevića, becoming for a time a capital / center for the Crnojevićs.

Obod was of political and religious importance: it was a seat of the state, and the seat of the Metropolitanate (church leadership).

The Crnojević Printing House

One of the earliest printing houses in the South Slavic region. Founded by Đurađ Crnojević around 1493, with the orthodox hieromonk Makarije supervising. The first book printed was Oktoih prvolasnik, completed on January 4, 1494. Other books followed: Oktoih petoglasnik, Psalter with lastings, Trebnik, Četvorojevandjelje.

The printing house was short-lived: it ceased operations in 1496 due to war and the flight of Đurađ Crnojević and Makarije to Italy. Today only foundation remains are preserved, with a commemorative plaque.

Ottoman Era and Capital Shift

In 1478, the Ottomans captured Žabljak Crnojevića. After defeat, Ivan Crnojević moved his seat to Obod / Rijeka Crnojevića. Thus Rijeka became capital / administrative centre.

The area (Riječka nahija) was one of the four territorial units (“nahije”) of Old Montenegro.

19th – Early 20th Century Developments

Danilo’s Bridge (“Danilov most”), also known as the old stone bridge, was built in 1853 by Prince Danilo Petrović-Njegoš, in memory of his father Stanko. It replaced a wooden bridge erected earlier by Petar II Petrović-Njegoš.

In 1905, a larger bridge connecting Rijeka Crnojevića with Virpazar was built under Prince Nikola.

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the town was an important market town / river port, especially for fish products (e.g. dried bleak). Trade, crafts, stores, factories were active. There was the first pharmacy in Montenegro, the first gun-shop, and a pearl factory (pearls made of fish scales) in “River” (i.e. the town).

The River (Rijeka Crnojevića) Itself

Length: ~12.3 km.

Source: Spring under a cave in the Obod hill, ~420 m high, ~2.5 km southwest of the small village Rijeka Crnojevica.

Course: It runs through the Village, is navigable for boats (plovna) after the first kilometer or so. It flows into Lake Skadar.

River features: Islands (“eyes” / small pools), scenic springs, water is clear; the river passes under old stone bridges; the surroundings are lush, with steep hills. It offers boating, fishing.

Notable Sites & Attractions

Danilo’s Bridge (Stari most / Most na Rijeci Crnojevića): double-arched limestone bridge, 43 meters long, built in 1853. A landmark and symbol of the Rijeka Crnojevica.

Obod (Rijeka’s Village / “Rijeka’s Village / Obod” settlement): hill-site above river, with remains of the medieval capital, Church of St. Nicholas (original destroyed, built anew 1743), remembrance of the printing house.

First elementary school: One of the first in the country, established mid-19th century, now named after hero Bora Vukmirović.

Pavlova Strana: A viewpoint region near where the river meets the lake—very photogenic.

Other: Traditional houses (stone architecture), old warehouses and buildings from 17-19th centuries; old bridge; local churches; small natural springs.
